Sellaronda Bike Day
Reaching top of Passo Gardena the crowd becomes more dense in anticpation of a short break before descending into a new valley.
The Sella Ronda Bike Day is a highly anticipated cycling event that attracts enthusiasts from all over the world. It takes place twice a year in the enchanting Dolomites. You may embark on a +50-kilometre journey that climbs 1650 metres. The route includes three breathtaking passes: Passo Gardena, Passo Sella and Passo Pordoi. All along the route there will be plenty of opportunities to take in the scenery and recharge your batteries for the next climb.
This inclusive event welcomes everyone from ambitious racers to experienced mountain bikers and e-bikers. You'll see a wild mix of gravel bikes, mountain bikes and electric versions. Local and international cycling clubs also make their presence felt, dressed to the nines. There are no formal categories or classifications in this event. It's all about the joy of cycling, the breathtaking views and the vibrant atmosphere on and off the bike. The valleys offer the opportunity to relax while listening to music, sipping coffee or browsing the sponsors' stands. It's a celebration of cycling and the breathtaking Dolomites that accompany you with every pedal stroke.
Whether you ride alone or in a group, you can experience the sheer joy of achieving your own goals through your own efforts, while enjoying the tranquillity of a motor-free environment. You'll be surprised at how quiet the mountain passes can be.
The event is also a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Italian cycling culture, where aesthetics and coffee are as much a part of the experience as the ride itself. Italian bike brands such as Pinarello, Basso and Bianchi are ubiquitous, adding to the authentic cycling culture that pervades the event. Looking to the left and right, you will notice the passion that goes into the outfit and the bike for the day, and you will be inspired to express your passion even more.
Apart from the social aspect, Italians and internationals are attracted to this event for its historic climbs. The Giro d'Italia often passes through parts of this route. The Gardena Pass has twice been the 'Cima Coppi' in the history of this prestigious race. The highest pass in the Dolomites, the Passo Pordoi, has been a stage finish on several occasions. A monument at the top of the Pordoi commemorates Fausto Coppi, five-time Giro and two-time Tour de France winner.
Spectators can immerse themselves in the event by joining the stands in the valley for coffee, food and music while watching the cyclists pass by.
The event can be arranged as a day trip for those in the area. Early birds will have the advantage of parking close to the entrances, allowing them to enjoy the first pass in relative peace. After the initial climb, you'll find yourself in the middle of a swarm of riders, each at their own pace.
Whether you're testing your climbing skills or simply looking for a day out in some of the most breathtaking scenery the Dolomites have to offer, the Sella Ronda Bike Day is a sporting and social experience well worth having. Enjoy the ride and let the breathtaking scenery and vibrant atmosphere make it a day to remember.
Descending on well maintained tarmac without any traffic offers chance to enjoy the view.
