“Everything here already has more power and life [...] and once again you believe in a [cycling] God”
Inspired by Johann Wolfgang Goethe, once he reached South Tyrol
Start your journey and head south, meandering through the enchanting Adige Valley. As you cycle at a relaxed pace, the stunning views unfold before you. You will find yourself surrounded by idyllic villages nestled in rolling hills and vineyards in this famous wine region near Lake Caldaro.
Soak up the scenery and take in the architectural beauty and quaint charm of the villages along the way. You may wish to stop occasionally, not only to savour the local delicacies, but also to soak up the tranquillity that emanates from this quintessentially South Tyrolean landscape. This first part of the journey is an opportunity to save your energy, as the steep climb that awaits you deserves your full attention.
We leave the high street after passing through Termeno, another beautiful vine village. The route turns north again, following the gentle course of the Adige river. As you pedal steadily along the dedicated cycling path, you will find yourself heading back towards Bolzano, eagerly anticipating the climb ahead. Once you made your way into the climb, each hairpin bend reveals breathtaking views of the vine-clad valleys below, a breathtaking spectacle for the lungs and the eyes. The climb is demanding but rewarding, a testament to the triumph of cycling.
At the summit, the landscape unfolds, offering serene solitude. The hilly terrain stretches out before you, a quiet main road that links Bolzano and Merano. Before you keep cycling, make a pit stop on one of the inviting sun terraces of plentiful hotels up here. The terrace at Schlaneider Hof is particularly dedicated for catering weary cyclists.
Once you continue your journey Merano appears in the distance, a beacon of its own charm. The descent into Merano is long and rewarding, requiring little more than gentle steering as you glide effortlessly into the town. Only two shadowy tunnels present a challenge, but these are quickly passed before you are welcomed into the magical cobbled streets of one of South Tyrol's most picturesque towns. The array of majestic buildings, framed by lush mountain backdrops, will undoubtedly entice you to pause once more.
As if on cue, the lure of gelato awaits. Savour the moment as you indulge in this delicious treat, the perfect complement to the picturesque surroundings. When you are ready to continue, the route takes you back through the green orchards of the area. This last section, slightly downhill, will allow you to rest your muscles or, if you still feel the need for speed, you can enjoy the thrill of a time trial to end your ride.
Throughout this journey, the Adige Valley reveals itself in layers of beauty and challenge, always inviting you to return.
